FAMILY SPACE IN OAKLAND

We transformed a 2000 sq ft space that had been used as storage for decades into everything this family had been missing: outdoor dining and lounge area, a space for musical gatherings, a bunny hutch and run, an ADU offce & workshop, bike storage and a secluded hot tub, and of course planting beds for ornamental and edibles.

In order to save a beautiful Manzanita tree that was in an old brick planter, we needed to create the new planting beds higher than grade using corten steel.  Decomposted granite paths lead through the garden and back to the hot tub.  California native sod was used for a small lawn (and bunny run).

Fruit trees are surround by low water ornamentals as well as herbs and vegetables.

A dry creek bed and fountain, under the Manzanita create the focal point in the main planting area.  Rainwater from the ADU is captured and routed to this creek bed, refueling the groundwater for even lower water use.

Soon the hot tub will be surrounded by pink jasmine, adding more privacy and sweetening the air in the Spring.
